The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared its theme for 2023 to be “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.” The aim of this theme is to promote the use of innovative technology to improve the health and wellbeing of women and girls, and to promote gender equality. This includes using technology to improve maternal health outcomes, to prevent and treat gender-based violence, and to promote access to sexual and reproductive health services.
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of technology in facilitating access to health care, education, and other services. However, it has also exposed the gender inequalities that exist in the use of technology. Women and girls are more likely to have limited access to digital technology due to factors such as poverty, illiteracy, and cultural norms that restrict their access to education and technology.
The theme also highlights the role of technology in promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls. For example, technology can be used to provide education and training opportunities, to promote women’s entrepreneurship, and to facilitate their participation in political and social decision-making processes.
The WHO’s theme also recognizes the need for a gender-responsive approach to the development and implementation of technology. This means ensuring that the design, development, and use of technology take into account the specific needs and experiences of women and girls, and do not perpetuate gender stereotypes or discrimination.
WHO’s 2023 theme is an important call to action for governments, policymakers, and the private sector to invest in innovative technology solutions that are accessible, affordable, and inclusive, and that address the specific needs and experiences of women and girls. This way we could be a step closer to a more just, free and inclusive society for all.
A meaningful #InternationalWomensDay2023 to all the amazing women across the world!
